Magellan became obsessed with converting more Filipinos to Christianity. With this aim in mind, on 27 April 1521, he and a small band of volunteers landed on an island acr- oss the water from Cebu. But instead of being welcomed, t- hey were attacked by the islanders. Because of his limp, Magellan could not defend himself very well. He was driven back into the water and killed with clubs and arrows. It was a tragic end for the man who had led one of the m- ost heroic of all voyages of discovery. He had charted over 2,000 kilometres (1,243 miles) of the coast of South Ameri- ca, discovered and crossed the Pacific Ocean, and proved b- eyond all doubt that the world was round.
